If you do decide to wait, the midwives may want to keep an eye on your progress and the baby's health - but your main priority should be relaxing and not worrying about the fallacy of due dates. ![]() Remember, you can ask for a sweep, but you can also say no if you'd rather wait. You may also receive two or three sweeps before labour starts or a hormonal induction is suggested. Some mums find induction labours are more intense and painful. Induced labour can be more painful than a labour that begins of its own accord, because the body receives a relatively swift dose of hormones rather than a gradual increase naturally. However it's important to remember that any such medication is also optional. Sweeps are one option before the midwife discusses inducing your labour through hormonal medication such as pitocin or prostaglandin. If you're not a first-time mum, you'll be offered a sweep at 41 weeks. If you're a first-time mum you may discuss a sweep at your 38-week, 40-week, and 41-week antenatal appointment.
